Westport travelled to Renmore today and were desperately unlucky to lose by 2-1. In a match scheduled for 2 pm, no ref showed up and another was drafted in at 2.55, which did neither teams any favours, having been on the pitch warming up since 1.30 in the wind and rain. When the match eventually got under way, Renmore opted to play with the stiff breeze, but Westport defended superbly. Rossa McAllister had a great chance to put the covies 1 up but shot straight at the keeper. And then on the stroke of halftime Renmore broke the deadlock with a terrific free kick that flew into the top corner. Within 5 mins of the 2nd half Utd were 2 down when Renmore scored from the penalty spot. But Utd camped themselves in the Renmore half for the remainder of the game and pulled a goal back through Tim Campion with 15 mins to go. One thought the equaliser was inevitable, but Renmore cleared chance after chance off the line, denying Oisin Ryall, Malcolm McEvilly and Sam Walsh. Then in the last minute, Kian Moore was hauled to the ground by the Renmore keeper, but amazingly the referee waved play on, and blew the whistle for full time a few seconds later. In a season that’s ended without silverware, this team has played some mesmerising football and are a credit to the club and their families.
